Supernova conference notes

Mon, Dec 9, 2002; by Dave Winer.

12/9/02; 10:30:21 AM by DW -- IBM and Microsoft

These guys lie. Why they're speaking at this conference is a mystery to me. They make it complicated to justify their pricetags. The IBM guy is speaking right now.

Sorry for the light notes. Howard is still speaking, we're talking back and forth about how political and economic power is going to change shape because of technology.

12/9/02; 8:50:42 AM by DW -- Howard Rheingold takes the stage

His most recent book is called Smart Mobs.

How systems have been blown apart, and how decentralization might give rise to new forms of centralized action. You can organize conferences via text messaging. Once you've sent a message to someone with two thumbstrokes they can send it to everyone in their address book.

12/9/02; 8:35:23 AM by DW -- Kevin Werbach opening remarks

Good morning and welcome to my realtime blog page for the Supernova conference. Please refresh the page to get the latest notes. Also if you're in the room, and blogging the show, please send me an email, with a URL.

The conference just started. Kevin is speaking now.

Decentralization is a really ugly word. It's the fundamental underlying trend that's going to form the industy the next few years. It's a threat for centralized industries like the music industry that depends on control of users. Supernova is what happens when a star blows up. The beginning is also an ending. He's explaining what decentralization is about. This is nothing new to Scripting News readers. We've been talking about this and doing it for quite a few years now.
